作曲したのはバレエ「ジゼル(Giselle 1841)」で
有名なフランスの作曲家アダンです。
発表当時は教会筋から「音楽性に乏しく、
全体として宗教的精神に欠けている」と
酷評を受けましたが、万人に親しまれる旋律は
時の審判を経てなお人気を保ち、
今日ではアダンならではの秀作として
愛されています。
作詞者のクラッポーはワイン商人を経て、
フランスのロクモール(Roquemaure)の市長に
なった人で、片手間に詩を書いていました。
英訳したドゥイトは音楽ジャーナル(Dwight's
Journal of Music)の編集をしていたと言われて
います。
